IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. The menace of torture still exists. Every day, CVT hears reports from survivors about torture occurring all over the world. And here in the United States, we have a president who has openly and repeatedly called for the use of torture. President Trump said:
“I’d bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.” (The Hill)
“And I would approve more than that. Don’t kid yourself, folks. It works, okay? It works. Only a stupid person would say it doesn’t work.” (Washington Post)
“We’re going to have to do things that are unthinkable.” (Huff Po)
These are dangerous words, especially considering our nation’s history. The CIA tortured human beings at secret black sites, using $81 million in American tax dollars just to design the torture program and yielding no significant intelligence. A 6,700-page U.S. Senate report exposes this shameful chapter in our history but has yet to be released. We need to learn the truth.
