IT’S HAPPENING NOW. Torture is ongoing in many places around the world. People are being tortured as you read this. Men are being waterboarded. Women are being raped in the presence of their families. Even children are tortured. The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) extends care to individuals all over the world who have survived torture.

And we’re facing the worst global refugee crisis in history, with over 65 million people forced from their homes. CVT’s research shows that up to 44 percent of refugees in the U.S. are survivors of torture. That means the refugee crisis is a torture crisis.

Resettlement is the only hope for countless refugee survivors. Refugees are the most heavily vetted entrants to the U.S. They enrich our communities. They benefit our economy. They need and deserve our help.

The U.S. recently took steps to dramatically reduce the number of refugee resettlements. This is unacceptable. We must be a safe haven and a beacon of hope. Don’t let our light go dark.

Stay vigilant. Take Action. Support survivors and reject torture.
