I am a nurse.

Manal was a nurse in a Syria hospital. She provided care to the wounded, regardless of any affiliation they might have had. This was unacceptable to the government. She was instructed not to care for members of the opposition. Manal said that her humanity and her professional integrity were tested by this, and so she quit her job. As a result, she was thrown in prison and forced to hear the cries from rape and torture, and she was tormented with interrogations and threats.

When she found a way out of prison, she escaped to Jordan where she found CVT and began her healing journey. For refugees like Manal who face political, religious and many other forms of persecution, fleeing from their country is often a matter of basic survival, not a choice.

The refugee crisis is a torture crisis.
